Assistant Controller

The Buffalo Urban League, a historic civil rights organization dedicated to economic empowerment, equality, and social justice, is seeking an Assistant Controller. An affiliate of the National Urban League, The Buffalo Urban League collaborates at the national and local levels with community leaders, policymakers, and corporate partners to elevate the standards of living for African Americans and other historically underserved groups. The Assistant Controller will be responsible for overseeing all day-to-day accounting operations of the finance department. This includes overseeing account analysis and reconciliation, including bank statements and contract reconciliations, preparing detailed financial statements and cash flow reports, overseeing the accounts payable, receivable, and payroll functions, oversight of monthly expense reports to contract agencies, and oversight of grants management.

Reporting to the CFO, the Assistant Controller will manage the Bookkeeper, Accounting Clerk and Accounts Payable Specialist/Payroll Coordinator. The ideal candidate will have solid leadership skills that include negotiation, problem solving, and delegation, as well as the ability to lead and motivate departmental staff. Other required competencies include: written and verbal communication skills, action orientation, analytical thinking, business acumen, decision making skills, follow through, and organization. The successful candidate will be a team leader and demonstrate a passion for the Buffalo Urban League’s mission to help African-Americans and others in underserved communities achieve their highest true social parity, economic self- reliance, power, and civil rights.

A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business or Finance and a minimum of 5 years of non-profit work experience, with 2 years in direct supervision is required. Also required are advanced computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite and computerized accounting software), and knowledge of GAAP, A-133, federal, state and county grant award regulations.
